Borussia Dortmund, from the German Bundesliga, and Atletico Madrid, representing the Spanish La Liga, advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals in Wednesday’s matches.
Dortmund secured their quarterfinal spot with a 2-0 victory over Dutch side PSV Eindhoven at home, achieving a 3-1 aggregate win. English midfielder Jadon Sancho scored early in the third minute, followed by a crucial goal by German veteran Marco Reus in the 95th minute at Signal Iduna Park.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid fought hard to eliminate Italian Serie A giants Inter Milan. The match ended 2-2 on aggregate, with Atletico winning 3-2 on penalties. Despite Inter Milan’s early advantage when Federico Dimarco scored in the 33rd minute, Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann leveled the aggregate just two minutes later. Although Atletico was still trailing, Dutch attacker Memphis Depay scored in the 87th minute to force extra time. With no further goals, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Inter’s Lautaro Martinez missed the decisive penalty.
The draw for the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
