The Hetauda Milk Distribution Project is presently gathering approximately 20,000 liters of milk from the Terai districts.
From the collected milk, 12,000 liters are directed to Biratnagar for powder milk production, while 6,000 liters are allocated to the Hetauda Milk Development Board. The project daily sells 4,000 liters of milk to local consumers in Birgunj of Parsa, Bharatpur, Narayangadh of Chitwan, and Hetauda of Makwanpur.
Procuring milk from 200 milk producer cooperatives in Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa of Madhes province, and Bagmati in Makwanpur, the project notes that although Terai district farmers produce over 200,000 liters of milk daily, the demand in local markets like Birgunj, Narayangadh, and Hetauda has not risen, as stated by Rajiv Khanal, the project’s head.

Consequently, the project plans to deploy a technical team for discussions with public representatives in Birgunj, Bharatpur, and Hetauda, as well as local consumers, aiming to boost demand in these cities.
To promote increased milk consumption, the project is currently manufacturing 700 liters of curd, 900 kg of ghee, 400 kg of paneer, and 500 kg of butter. Additionally, various types of sweets are being produced.
Krishna Bahadur Shrestha, the project’s information officer, mentioned that due to lower demand in the local market, daily milk purchases have decreased by 2,000 liters. The government-owned project, employing 150 individuals, operates under the auspices of the Government of Nepal.
