PM Modi revealed several metro initiatives across the nation, showcasing India’s inaugural underwater metro line in Kolkata.
After the official unveiling, the Prime Minister embarked on a metro journey from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, accompanied by school children.
The Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor witnessed the inauguration of the Rs 4,965-crore Howrah Maidan to Esplanade section, featuring India’s first transportation tunnel beneath a river. The tunnel, situated under the Hooghly River, traverses through the deepest metro station in the country—Howrah metro station.
Officials reported that the underwater segment of the tunnel spans 520 meters, and the metro journey through it takes approximately 45 seconds, as per PTI.
Prime Minister Modi, accompanied by state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and WB LoP and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, engaged with metro personnel during the ride.
In a ceremony held at the Esplanade metro station, the Prime Minister inaugurated both the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section of the New Garia-Airport line and the Taratala-Majerhat section of the Joka-Esplanade line within the Kolkata Metro, the oldest metro network in the country. Notably, the Majerhat metro station is a distinctive elevated structure spanning railway lines, platforms, and a canal, according to an official statement.
