The Nepal Women’s National Cricket Team is gearing up for the ACC Women’s Asia Cup 2024, scheduled to be hosted in Sri Lanka. The announcement was made by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) via their social media platforms on Tuesday.
Initially, Nepal faced disappointment after losing to Malaysia in the semi-finals of the ACC Women’s Premier Cup held in February, which caused them to miss out on a spot in the Asia Cup. However, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) later included Nepal, expanding the tournament to eight teams. The event is set to take place in Dambulla from July 19-28, as per the ACC’s recent schedule announcement.
The ACC’s press release highlighted the addition of Nepal to the Asia Cup alongside cricketing powerhouses like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, along with semi-finalists of the Women’s Premier Cup 2024 – UAE, Malaysia, and Thailand.
This marks the Nepali women’s team’s third appearance in the Asia Cup, having participated previously in the T20 Asia Cup editions of 2012 and 2016. The upcoming tournament will also feature the T20 format.
Nepal finds itself in Group A, competing against India, Pakistan, and the UAE, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Thailand. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals.
Nepal will kick off their campaign against Pakistan on July 19, followed by a match against the UAE on July 21, and will wrap up the group stage against India on July 23.
