AUSTRALIA– After extensive rainfall in New South Wales, Australia, on Sunday, over a hundred people have been affected by flooding.
Emergency services, facing the risk of flooding and drowning in northeastern Sydney, have evacuated nearly 300 households to safety. Federal Emergency Management Minister Catherine King reported widespread damage across the state due to the floodwaters in a short span of time. “The New South Wales government is continuing efforts to assess the damage and understand the impact of this disaster,” Minister King stated.
According to State Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib, rescue workers have prepared for news since Friday and have evacuated approximately 200 households to safe locations. He noted that around five thousand volunteers worked throughout the night to assist those affected.
The state’s Emergency Commissioner, Carlene York, has been issuing regular updates on how to survive flood-related risks in affected areas.
Climate change experts have been consistently warning about the increased risk of natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and cyclones. In the last eighteen months, the region has experienced more than seven instances of flooding, compared to just two in the preceding two years.
Officials have initiated relief efforts, including cleaning expenses and financial assistance for emergency housing.
